چکیده

Abstract Background Intravenous iron is now the standard treatment to correct preoperative anaemia. However, may promote tumour growth and progression which could influence cancer recurrence survival. We explore long term postoperative outcomes of patients receiving oral (OI) or intravenous (IVI) as part a randomised controlled trial. Method The multicentre IVICA trial anaemic colorectal in 1:1 fashion receive either OI IVI prior their elective operation. Follow up analysis all was performed Kaplan-Meier survival estimates Cox proportional hazard models were used compare groups. A pooled comparing who did/did not achieve resolution anaemia also undertaken. Result, Data available for 106 116 (OI n=55, n=51). Median follow 61 months (IQR 38-68, [range 1-80]). Overall at 3 5 years 82%(95% CI 76-90) 72%(58-83) respectively 75%(61-86) 59%(45-72) IVI, P=0.106. No significant difference 5-year overall (HR 1.73, 95% 0.90-3.34 P=0.102) disease-free 1.50, 0.83-2.73 P=0.182) observed between Those non-anaemic operation demonstrated improved year 3.26 [1.01-10.58], P=0.05). Non-significant trends 2.29 [0.91-5.81], p=0.08) group Conclusion Preoperative correction confers advantage following surgery. Due its superior efficacy recommended choice this Take-home message anaemia, achieved most effectively with iron, offer after

Long-Term Efficacy of Postpartum Intravenous Iron Therapy

BACKGROUND The potential benefits of administering a dose of intravenous iron in patients with moderate postpartum anaemia rather than oral iron alone remains unproven. AIMS To determine whether a single injection of intravenous iron followed by a 6-week course of oral iron is as effective over 6 months in restoring normal haemoglobin levels and replenishing iron stores in women with moderate...

Optimal Iron Replacement for Colorectal Cancer-Induced Anaemia

Introduction: Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is commonly a result of colorectal cancer. Higher preoperative haemoglobin (Hb) is associated with an improved post-operative survival. The endpoint of normalising patients Hb is to reduce the need for perioperative blood transfusion which has oncological, safety and economic benefits. Methods: This study aims to compare the overall effect and cost be...

The impact of anaemia and intravenous iron replacement therapy on outcomes in cardiac surgery.

Anaemia is common in patients with cardiac disease and also in those undergoing cardiac surgery. There is increasing evidence that preoperative anaemia is associated with increased patient morbidity and mortality following surgery. We performed a systematic literature review to assess the impact of anaemia and intravenous (IV) iron supplementation on outcomes in cardiac surgery. Sixteen studies...

Clinical update: intravenous iron for anaemia.

For nearly half a century, parenteral iron has been considered dangerous and for use only in extreme situations and when oral iron was not tolerated. This proscription was based largely on poorly characterised and infrequent anaphylactoid reactions to the high-molecular-weight dextran preparation (Imferon) that for most of this time was the only product available. Moreover, when parenteral iron...

Iron Deficiency Anaemia in Pregnancy and Postpartum: Pathophysiology and Effect of Oral versus Intravenous Iron Therapy

Nutritional iron-deficiency anaemia (IDA) is the most common disorder in the world, affecting more than two billion people. The World Health Organization's global database on anaemia has estimated a prevalence of 14% based on a regression-based analysis. Recent data show that the prevalence of IDA in pregnant women in industrialized countries is 17.4% while the incidence of IDA in developing co...
